Beata Wilczek & Łukasz Wierzbowski: I wanna fold you

Opening: Thursday, 21 January 2016, 7 p.m. / The artists will be present.

Duration: 22 January – 28 February 2016

Location: Concept Store NO WÓDKA, Pappelallee 10, 10437 Berlin

During Berlin’s upcoming Fashion Week, the concept store NO WÓDKA will open the first duo exhibition by Polish artist Beata Wilczek and photographer Łukasz Wierzbowski on January 21st, 2016.

‚I wanna fold you‘ is a collaborative project by these two young creatives about folds, body movement, and speed. Shot within the context of a fashion editorial, the photo series also addresses notions of value and transparency in fashion. Iconic garments from Issey Miyake’s Pleats Please collection were photographed at Dong Xuan Center, the largest Vietnamese wholesale market in Berlin, contrasting the meticulously crafted garments with the poor, colorful, and dirty rough setting. Meanwhile, clothes from Primark were shot at Bikini Berlin, which is advertised as “the world’s first Concept Mall, a collection of carefully curated and compatible boutiques, concept and flagship stores and gastronomy and service providers.” By relocating the branded garments to such extreme locations, the photographers question fashion imagery and its politics. They also offer a view of the architecture at two exceptional commercial spaces in Berlin, where fashion is kept and sold.

Beata Wilczek (*1986) is an artist, curator and fashion lecturer. She lives and works between Berlin and London. The main focus of her current research is on parallels between art and fashion objects and their value. Her work analyses the similarities between art and fashion systems and her interdisciplinary practice is based on collaborative projects. She holds MA from Central Saint Martins (London) and MA in Social Psychology from SWPS University (Poland). Recent exhibitions include FOLD at Sky Tower (Wrocław, Poland), Pavilion of Comrades at Intelligentsia Gallery (Beijing, China) and It has never been so fluo at Supermarket Gallery (Budapest, Hungary). Her works have been published in i.e. New York Times, Vice, Novembre, Frische and exhibited internationally in galleries and museums in Poland, London and Paris. She has worked with many fashion brands and currently is a fashion theory lecturer at School of Form (Poznan, Poland).

Łukasz Wierzbowski (*1983) is a photographer based in Berlin and Wrocław. His work has appeared in numerous photography magazines and several leading independent magazines around the world. In his photographs Wierzbowski examines the enigmatic relationship between the model and the landscape: the everyday settings become unconventional spaces and ordinary occurrences become extraordinary happenings in a seemingly random sequence of captured moments-inbetween. His analog works resonate with cinematic quality and intimate atmosphere. Wierzbowski’s work has been exhibited with solo and group shows around the world: New York, L.A., London, Berlin, Warsaw, Moscow, Madrid, Rome, Milan, Melbourne and Taipei. His clients include Penguin Books, Saatchi & Saatchi, Urban Outfitters, Stern, Nylon, Marie Claire, and SZ Magazin.
